Before I tell you about the Dolby Atmos, I will like to introduce some basic terms:
- Mono,
- Stereo,
- Dolby Digital,
- Dolby Digital Plus.
I have explained about these terms in the articles (Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus), you must know about these terms before going through this topic. So please read the articles first I have given, you should check this article afterward.
What is Dolby Atmos?
This is an enhancement of existing surround sound by adding upfiring speakers. Height channels create amazing sound that a normal surround sound can not produce.
It creates a 3D environment so it is also called 3D audio.
Its biggest competitor is DTS:X.
In Old Times
Previously, This was only found in cinemas and home theatre systems. But these days, you find Atmos supported in mobiles, tablets and earphones too.
In Mobiles & Tablets
These days, you will find Atmos support in mobile phones and tablets. But do you really get the Atmos experience through these smartphones and tabs?
Yes and no.
There is a hardware decoder in mobile phones & tablets that decodes the Atmos enabled content (such as Dolby Atmos enabled movie, song, etc) for you.
You will also get Atmos sound even from your standard content that is not Atmos enabled. But you will not get proper experience in these types of content.
My Experience
I have a Samsung Galaxy tablet that supports Dolby Atmos.
Let me tell you here you will get only a hint of this technology in tablets and mobile’s. You can’t enjoy the proper Dolby Atmos experience on these devices. That’s why when I click the Dolby Atmos in my samsung galaxy tab, it will slightly enhance the voice.
Channels
You will get the actual experience of Atmos effect in 5.1 or above configuration channels.
Below 5.1, you will get only hint of this technology.
How To Get Proper Dolby Atmos?
For getting the proper Dolby Atmos experience, there should be height channels. But these days many different devices support Dolby Atmos without the need of height channels.
Dolby Atmos is basically a trick that fools your mind and ears for experiencing realism.
For experiencing the proper Dolby Atmos sound, you will need a Atmos compatible movie file, tv show file (such as Netflix) and Dolby Atmos enabled devices (such as soundbar, speaker systems).
Dolby Atmos works 360 with height channels. So you will experience moving around you.
For ex: When you are watching a movie, This technology creates bubbles of thunder in clouds, raindrops scenes like they are 10 feet above your head.
Conclusion
Unlike stereo (that has only two channels left & right), Atmos catches all the little details from movie or scene. Sound all around you called Dolby Atmos. Now you must have idea of Dolby Atmos. So if you purchase any music system, soundbar, home theatre or any sound related gadget, you should check the Atmos support in that product to get the high level experience.
