Before I will explain about Dolby digital, Dolby digital 5.1, Dolby Digital Surround Sound I would like to introduce with terms like “Mono” & “Stereo”.

In old times, before Dolby, “Mono” & “Stereo” was famous.

Mono is a single channel or single speakers. Recording and listening both was in Mono or single channel.

In “Stereo”, there was left and right channels or speakers for recording and listening both.

Now, I am introducing Dolby Digital. This is previously called AC-3.

Dolby 5.1 means we can record with 5.1 and also listen in 5.1 channel.

After this technology was introduced in the market, the sound quality was better than before.

About Channels:

Stereo’s Channels:

2 Channels (Left & Right).

In stereo, you can feel the sound only from left and right.

Dolby Digital’s Channels:

5.1 channels (left, right, center, rear left, rear right) & 1 subwoofer.

In this dolby digital surround sound, you will listen sound from everywhere from left, right, rear left, rear right, center.

Lest explore the Dolby digital 5.1 a bit more:

The technology supports 2.1, 3.1, 4.1 & 5.1 channel.

In 5.1, the front three channels (left, right, center) gives you the clear diagoules and other two (rear left, rear right) is for creating the surround sound of being in the middle of the action. That’s all about the main 5 channels.

Talking about the .1. .1 is for subwoofer. Subwoofer is for low frequency and low bass.

Comparing Sound Quality

Stereo’s Sound:

In stereo, if you are listening the voice of moving helicopter in stereo channel, you will experience the voice goes from left to right. When the helicopter moves from left to right, you left ear listens it first and slowly feels the low voice in your left ear. And your right ear experience the high voice as the helicopter moves to your right ear.

Dolby Digital’s Sound:

If you listen same hellicopter’s voice in digital 5.1 channel, you will experience a very accurate voice. You will feel that you are sitting really in that environment where hellicopter moves around you. Surround sound add realism wheather you are watching movies, listening to music or anything.

Detailed Explanation

This technology works horizontally only not vertically and this provides you with 360 of sound.

Dolby digital 5.1 is a coding technique reduces the unnecessary noise or sound without distrubing the quality of sound. Dolby digital 5.1 compresses the raw sound file without decreasing the sound quality.

You will feel exactly the same experience of a particular scene that you are present in at that moment.

In these days, several tv shows, movies, video games are digital enabled. That’s why you experience a good quality.
